With rapid urbanisation and rising incomes, India is facing a massive waste management challenge. Urban population of India generates 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum. Only 43 million tonnes (MT) of the waste is collected, 11.9 MT is treated and 31 MT is dumped in landfill sites. India generates about 1.7 million tonnes of electronic waste and only 1.5% of the total e-waste generated is recycled. Biomedical waste generation is about 484 tonnes per day. It is the need of the hour that focus of waste management shifts to processing and resource recovery.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) recognises this need and is organizing an advanced five-day training programme on “Integrated Waste Management”. CSE’s short-term EIA training programme UNDERSTANDING EIA: FROM SCREENING TO DECISION MAKING

What direction should waste management take in North East India? What does the future hold in store? Are landfills the answer? Is Waste-to-energy technology still a good bet? Why segregation is the key? These are some of the questions that come to our minds when thinking about the fragile ecosystem of North East India.

Of the 14 cities, that CSE rated, we have rated Aizawl, Agartala and Gangtok from North-East. The system for rating cities was to determine who is the cleanest of them all in terms of solid waste management. It is clear that cities that are segregating their waste have been able to effectively process and treat it and have achieved the status of zero landfill cities. While, some cities are doing - part segregation and part treatment. And then, there are a few cities, that are visibly clean but dumping their waste.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi is releasing its book ‘Not in My Backyard: Status of Solid Waste Management in Indian Cities’ in Guwahati, Assam. The book release shall be followed by a discussion with municipal commissioners, regulators, urban planners, consultants and NGOs on the need to have zero landfill cities across North East India.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is an important tool to inform decision- makers, regulators and stakeholders, about the possible environmental, social and economic costs of the proposed project. To be effective, it requires the active involvement of all concerned stakeholders.

There is a genuine need to develop the capacity of the state-level regulators and state level expert appraisal Committee (SEAC) to screen and scope the EIA process, to conduct transparent public consultations and to evaluate the EIA reports, especially after the new EIA notification. At the same time, there is a need among CBO, NGOs, academicians, and environment managers to review and interpret EIA report, as they are technical in nature.

Centre for Science and Environment recognises this need and has developed a hands-on five-day training programme aimed at giving practical exposure to participants on EIA with specific reference to coal based power plant, cement, pharmaceutical, mining and others. After the programme, the participants shall have:

1. Exposure to all aspects of EIA, from its theory to the practical – such as better understanding regarding

• What data is required, how this data should be collected and interpreted, and significance of the data

• Effectiveness of the assessment methods

• What issues should be addressed in the Terms of Reference (TOR)

The objective of this programme is to build a cadre of trained professional who can conduct and review SIA reports. The fast growing economy, rapid industrialization and growing urban population in India along with increasing wastewater generation are some of the major reasons for concern and reiterate the need for appropriate water management practices. Centre for Science and Environment recognizes this need and has developed a five-day hands on training programme aimed at giving practical exposure to participants on wastewater treatment for industrial and urban wastewater management including reuse and recycle.

E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in India- with a growth rate of 10% per annum- the generation of e-waste is increasing exponentially every year. This can be attributed to globalization of the economy making electronic products an integral part of our lives. Also, India’s low manufacturing costs, skilled labour, raw materials, availability of engineering skills and opportunity to meet demand in the populous Indian market have contributed significantly to facilitate the growth of the electronics industry. Thus, E-waste management has become an immediate and long term concern as its unregulated accumulation and recycling can lead to major environmental problems endangering human health.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) recognizes this need and has designed hands-on three day training programme on E-waste Management from November 25-27, 2015 at CSE, New Delhi. Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi is going to organise a hands-on two-day training programme aimed at giving practical exposure to participants on EIA with specific reference to wind power projects.

The objective of this programme is to enable stakeholders to understand the likely impacts of the project and allows them to make sound decisions during various stages of project development.

As of 2012, India has exploited only 18% of its total wind power potential. Majorly, the country’s total wind power potential is concentrated in the southern and western states- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Most of these potential sites are located in the forest areas. To harness the maximum potential of wind energy with reduced impacts it thus becomes very important to undergo for an EIA for wind power projects.

CSE’s two day training programme to be held in Bangalore on 17-18 September, 2013, aims to address the following points:

• Why EIA is important for wind power project?

• Environmental and social issues associated with the sector

• Applicable policy, guidelines and legal provisions for the wind power sector  in India

• Comparison of  EIA process in different countries for wind power projects

• Data collection

• Prediction, evaluation and  assessment of impacts

• Importance of avian fauna assessment , technique and evaluation

• How to prepare an Environment Management Plan (EMP)

• Best practices associated with wind power sector

• Reviewing an EIA report for wind power project

   

CSE will bear the course fee of the workshop which would include the lectures, study material and food for two days.
