Meeting of the rivers

The black river 'Rio Negro' meets the whitish river 'Rio Solimoes' near Manaus. Because of their different chemical and physical properties, the waters do not mix for quite a few miles.

The city of Manaus has grown and is now eating into the Amazon forest on its boundary. The square patch of forest edge that you see in the top right of the satellite imagery is the Reserva Ducke. It was a forest experiment station that was made into a botanical garden by the city of Manaus for stopping the advancement of the city into the Amazon. Of course the city if growing in other directions. 'Development' takes a toll on the forest and other natural resources!
