The Rio Negro is a tributary of the mighty Amazon. Manaus is the biggest city in the Amazon region and till very recently accessible only by river of by air. Manaus also has aa very big manufacturing zone and ships are the preferred mode of transport of raw material to Manaus and that of finished products (including cars!) out of Manaus.
