Background

The increasing urban population and ever increasing migration towards the urban clusters has put additional pressure on the availability of natural resources. This has caused several environmental and resource depletion issues. Increasing human activities, intervention and industrialization has led to increase the toxic elements in the resources viz. Air, Water and Soil; affecting the balance of habitat. This is posing a great challenge on the existence of the living and non living organisms in the ecosystem. There is a great need to create systems and networks to ensure optimum utilization of resources. As per one of the reports by McKinsey Global Institute (2015), India will have 68 cities with a population of over one million by the year 2035.

Management of Resources through Smart Cities

The management of resources with this additional pressure on the urban areas would become a great challenge. An efficient and sustainable solution for serving urban areas is need of the hour. The concept and model of smart cities is of significant importance. A smart city integrates the information and communication technology (ICT) and internet of things (IOT) to manage city’s resources cum assets. This includes managing local departments’ information system, schools, libraries, transport, hospitals, power plants, water supply networks, waste management, law enforcement and other community services through ICT based services.  The sustainable management of resources with efficient system will help in improving life standards of this population. As India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Government of India carrying forward the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has started taking steps to develop smart cities, which will be self sustainable habitats with maximum resource mobilization, optimized energy supplies and efficient public transportation system with a healthy quality of life.

National Conference

Keeping forward the momentum, National Conference on Sustainable Development of Smart Cities is going to be organized by IDC Foundation in collaboration with Grass Roots Research & Creation India (P) Ltd. and International Roma Cultural University, Belgrade, Serbia on Sept 22-23, 2017, which aims to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers, urban and environmental planners, information technology experts, regulators, administrators and developers and in fact all stakeholders involved in the designing, planning and implementation to exchange and discuss their ideas and share their experiences related with the progress achieved so far in various aspects and issues of Smart Cities Mission with a view to evolve innovative recommendations for achieving the goals and objectives of sustainable development of smart cities as being envisioned under a broad framework of Smart Cities Guidelines 2015 of Government of India. A copy of brochure can be viewed at <https://issuu.com/bhaveshjha/docs/conf_brochure_sdsc-2017.pdf.pdf>;

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organizing a hands-on three-day training programme on Environmental Impacts with specific reference to renewable energy power projects.

Social innovation has been hard at work, devising and applying creative ideas to solve development issues.

A few weeks ago, the people of India were gifted with one of the steepest hike in petrol prices; a hike of about Rs 7.5. This came as a surprise to many while some commentators argued that this was a natural hike. While the Indian people have been quietly protesting (in their drawing rooms) the continuous hike in petrol prices that came after its deregulation in 2010, this time the protest was much more vocal due to the steepness of the hike.

Post - Team Head - Will have to take a lead role in research, policy briefs, report writing, organising conferences/workshops/training and in advocacy and campaign on renewable energy issues.


Experience - Candidate must have at least ten years of experience in the energy sector including at least five years in the renewable energy sector. Should have experience in team management. Candidate must be willing to travel, network and report on issues.

Other Requirements - The position demands competency in English speaking and writing skills. Candidates should be comfortable in interacting with people and giving presentations.

The Energy Glut: The planet is getting hotter and its population is getting fatter and fossil
fuel energy use is the principal cause of both. This is the claim
that Phil Edwards and I make in our new book ‘The Energy Glut’
that will be launched in London next week (6pm Wednesday 3rd
November,LSHTM, Keppel Street, London). We will call on
climate change negotiators at next month’s climate talks in
Cancun Mexico to look around them and see what fossil fuel energy
use is doing to Mexicans’ waistlines and to their health.

Car use
has decimated physical activity in Mexico.
Road death is the second leading cause of healthy life years
lost; the capital is one of the most polluted cities in the world
where a fifth of commuters spend over two hours each day in
gridlock, and then with physical activity at an all time low, the
food and beverage industry have pounced on Mexicans like a pack
of dogs – perhaps not surprising in a country that elected a Coca
Cola boss to lead them as President.

The new book
adds evidence to the claim that
reducing fossil fuel energy use is good for the planet and good
for health. The decarbonisation of
towns and cities could end the global obesity epidemic and
greatly improve health and well-being – people could enjoy moving
rather than being moved and oil wars could become a thing of the
past.

All proceeds from the book go to an organization of victims of road traffic crashes.

Dear Friends,

A small suggestion from my end.If we can make an earth hour a success in an year then what will happen if we all together voluntarily swithoff 10-15 minutes of power every day during peak hour.and have a candle light dinner with our family members together. as i have observed in my family itself that we eat at different time watching televison.

This may build relation between our family members and also conserve energy.

i am implementing this idea right now . i request all of you to join my small hand so that we can atleast start a begining
