I have completed PhD in microbiology (topic is related to environmental science) but I have good enough experience in water quality testing, air monitoring and soil testing. I want to work independently now, could anybody suggest me, how to move?

How to start environmental sample testing laboratory

  • Dear Prashanth,

I appreciate your motivation to start a testing laboratory. You have to be very cautious. Note the following points.

    1. Conduct some market survey on the need for such a laboratory and its best location. Location must be accessable to clients and employees.

    3. Identify parameters that are in demand for testing.

    3. Work out the cost of analysis for a comprehensive set of parameters, for example waste water and drinking water analysis.

    3. Identify an expert who can help you in identifying laboratory requirements, process of accreditation, selection of marketing, managerial and technical staff.

    4. Identify source of money and repayment capabilities.

In addition, plan only ethical practices, and look forward to implementing quality assurance.

    Best wishes

  • Dear Prashant,

Application form for laboratory recognition can be downloaded from CPCB website.

3 sets of filled in application form have to be submitted to MoEF and CPCB.

Preliminary scrutiny of the application received based on criteria for evaluation & assessment of

environmental laboratory by CPCB & SPCB.

A Joint inspection will be done by MoEF and CPCB in coordination with SPCB.

The inspection report will be put up to Expert Committee.

If the laboratory fulfills the minimum requirements, Expert Committee may recommend for recognition.

  • Dear Prashant,

As I know you have to contact CPCB or Pollution State board where you are residing to get the regulations of opening the Lab. because any such lab you must have their approval then only your lab results will be accepted as the authentic one.

    Where are you located?

  • Hi Prashant,

while the time is right to start such ventures... coz INDIAN pollution norms are getting tighter and stricter... this kind of venture would require substantial investment in equipments and expert manpower... without these it would be difficult to get on to the panel of any state pollution control board since they are the once who recognize / authorize such testing labs...without getting on to the panel of recognized labs ....this exercise seems un-viable for business...all the best

    Cheers
