Sacred Life

Art Work

One of my Western friends once asked me, “ Why do Hindus worship Gods in Animal and Plant forms?” “It’s because,” I told my friend, “Hindus believe God is OMNIPRESENT i.e., present everywhere & in everything. There is no place where you can’t find God. All plants & animals are as important to them as human beings & sacred too”.

“Agreed,” says science! All living beings on this planet are equal & play important roles in the complex systems they live in. Treating their roles in the complex webs with respect & protecting them is a must for the very survival of mankind. Because when there are no plants & animals on this planet even man cannot survive on earth.

Although there are several plant & animal forms that are worshipped by Hindus, I chose only the important ones for my painting. My painting shows Ganesha, the God with an elephant head. Blue Jay is considered in some parts of India as incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Nagaraja is the snake worshipped all over India. Hanuman is the monkey God. Tulasi (Oscimum) is a sacred plant & cow is a sacred animal for Hindus. Lord Vishnu’s ten incarnations include Varahavatara (varaha=pig, avatara=incarnation), Narasimhavatara (nara=man, simha=lion)-God with lion head, Koormavatara (koorma=tortoise) & Matsyavatara (matsya=fish). All these plant & animal forms are worshipped by Hindus as they are considered sacred by them

The double helix of DNA represents life – which is central – surrounded by a ring of chromosomes- to show that life in all its forms is sacred. Bringing science, religion & art together for the cause of conservation is my main aim in painting this picture.

  • People, let's bring some perspective here, and stop getting angry and emotional over every little thing.. :) No 'real' purohit will exploit other people, but contribute to their upliftment!

God is omnipresent, yes, but He is not impersonal DNA. He is the Creator of everything - as Krishna, Jehoavah, and Allah - same person called in different names. It's not as if Dr. K K Challa intends to equate DNA with God. My understanding is that DNA is proof that God exists, and His creativity is as versatile as the biodiversity on our planet. Scientific Philosophy without religion is just mere speculation; religion without philosophy is mere sentimentalism.

If the tools of science can bring about a cultivated understanding that, in the end, God is one, the religious tension in places like Ayodhya and Palestine will be dissolved. Through art, we can bring such realization into the eyes of the public, but unfortunately, subjective interpretation renders the purpose to fail - unless we can accept a wider point of view..

    Please try to understand.. :]

  • In very Being life, there is hope for everything, that either exist or not..this belief comes from form the fact that God is there, and looking us!
EVerything,...situtations,relations, emotions, either professional or personal holds its place!...so, its not DNA only being important but otheers too..:):), teaching you to respect everything, and value it!
  •   1)If DNA(double helix ) is considered as vital form of life, then what about RNA,tRNA,mRNA,monohelical RNA etc...Then these shall all be as god..,is this possible, to make each form of chemical into GOD,does it sounds GOOD..?

       2) WHY WE HUMANS BEINGS ONLY HAVE to feel that their is GOD..? Does rest of the animals do ,feel so....& do they have god as in any form (in thought...,deity...etc...)..then if so what about the microbes....?
