Root adaptation

In the Amazon forests, the top layer of soil contains most of the nutrients and that gets recycled in the same layer, the roots of many trees have adpated to make use of the nutrients in the top soil. The trees generally do not have a deep root system and therefore can fall in case of high winds.

Deforestation of the Amazon for cattle ranching and soya bean cultivation, therefore, doesn't provide us a rich fertile soil as the nutrients are lost together with the forests.
