My favorite vegetable

This photo shows a ripe bitter gourd at Kalachandjis' Community garden at Dallas, TX, where I worked for a while. Also called a bittermelon in the USA, karela in Hindi, and kakarakaya in my mother tongue Telugu, this can be cooked into a wet curry, an Andhra-style pulusu, or deep fried chips..

  • One reason I did put this picture up is that most karela in the US is shipped [in freezers] from India What a huge carbon footprint!!! At Kalachandjis Community Garden, karela is being grown successfully, EVEN without need for artificial fertilizers. My friend, Shalagram Das, who coordinates and maintains the garden uses Hi-Brix gardening method, which is natural like the traditional Indian agriculture. If it can be produced here successfully, WHY should we pay high price to get them from India? Enjoying my favorite vegetable would not be a guilty experience, then... :)

    My wife loves to make Karela too!! We get it at the Asian store here in Fairfax, Virginia!
