Thank you for the picture. May I draw your attention to a description and a brief illustration of the picture above children waring traditional dresses on the occasion of BIHU. The above is the celebration of the famous and most popular BIHU dance of Assam. Bihu is observed for peace, happiness and cultural harmony. Bihu is a traditional crop harvest-linked festival of Assam; there are three Bihus (which coincide with completion of agricultural activities in different season in a year-- first the most colourful is the RANGALI BIHU (it is a Bihu of colour, dance and culture, The festival is celebrated for one month in the past, starting on the first Bohag (Baishakh), but now a day, it is cutshort to a week or even four days- first day dedicated to Household cattle (being the contributor of food and livelihood security at household level), second day is for family, friends and society, third day is for GOD/Guru (goxai) and elders finally the other cultural events including community and/or open BIHU dance etc., Seond Bihu is called BHOGALI BIHU indicating it is the celebration of good harvest on 14th January (Sankranti day). People get together to observe camp-fire and have community feast with new harvest. THird one is the KONGALI BIHU implying the pre-harvest household food security situation. It is a warning situation that if the harvest within a month or so, is not satisfactory, then famine like (Kongal) situation may arise. That is why the function is very simple and sybloic too.
The above description is to inform and sensitize people about the significance of Bihu celebration in Assam. This cultural ethos must be kept alive before it dies away in the onslaught of "Modernism". If the old and elders remember, it may die with age, but the Children and youth understand (as reflected above) the need to keep the cultural bonanza alive they can do, sustain and enrich it.
