High volume samplers have been in use for several decades for measuring suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere. As clinical evidence showed that smaller particles have more severe impact on health, measurement of particles up to 10 micron in size was taken up and recently, the interest has shifted to particles of size up to 2.5 micron. In practically all Indian cities, more so in the larger ones, the concentration of particulate matter in all sizes exceeds the prescribed standards. More precise data is available on the web site of the Central Pollution Control Board.
