About IIT Roorkee


Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The Institute ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering.

The Institute has completed 150th year of its existence in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The Ordinance is now converted into an Act by the Parliament to make IIT, Roorkee as an "Institution of National Importance".

The Institute offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres.

The Institute admits students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centres all over India.

The Department of Environment Engineering is housed under Department of Civil Engineering in IIT Roorkee.

 

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (Formerly University of Roorkee) is the oldest and the largest in the country and is considered as the best in the country for education in Civil Engineering. It was established on October 19, 1847 as Roorkee College in renamed as the Thomason College in 1854. The department is producing several eminent engineers who are making notable contributions in the planning and execution of Civil Engineering projects in India as well as abroad.

The department offers a four-year course leading to the Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and two-year courses leading to Master’s degree in eight major specialisations of civil engineering (viz., Bulding Science and Technology, Computer Aided Design, Environmental Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering). These programmes are supported with strong doctoral programmes in all the specialisations. More than 100 Ph. D. research scholars work in the department on emerging research problems. The department has justifiably provided itself on the quality of its academic programmes and is keeping pace with the latest developments in engineering education.

The research programmes of the department are funded by various agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, MOST, ISRO, MHRD, AICTE, DRDO etc. Research fellows working on these programmes are also eligible to register for the Ph. D., as per the Institute’s guidelines.  Teaching faculty of other engineering colleges under the Quality Improvement programme also conduct research at the department to earn Ph. D. Degree.

The faculty of the department continues to strive loftier by exploring new frontiers of knowledge, imparting the latest technical knowledge to the students and conducting high quality of research. The faculty also renders technical advice on live engineering problems to various agencies in the form of consultancy projects worth crores of rupees.
