Cadmium Metal Pollution

One tonne of zinc metal produced ..co-produces approximately 3 kg of Cadmium metal. Presently Vedanta Resources have approximately one million tonnes of zinc capacity per annum...which means they should have 3 million kgs of Cadmium metal production per annum...but they don't have it..!!!!   Now a big question arises..where does that quantity of cadmium metal bearing materials is being...disposed/dumped... Cadmium metal is a hazardous..it is a well known fact......So Cadmium is being dumped...all over the country...??? Who would be overseeing this...???

  •  I hope MoEF and the government board of directors at Vedanta Resources, Hindustan Zinc Limited.... Ms. Sujata Prasad, Joint Secretary & Financial Adviser in Ministry of Mines, Government of India,Ms. Shaukat Ara Tirmizi - a retired Advisor (Finance) from Department of Telecom in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, and Mr Mishra was appointed on the Board in December 2012. Mr D S Mishra, Joint Secretary in Ministry of Mines , also on the board of National Aluminium Company Limited and Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited.... hold the principle of corporate governance to great esteem...ask the polluters to stop it immediately...

  • Indian Bureau of Mines indicates only 913000 kgs of installed capacity in the country... click here to download :  http://ibm.gov.in/IMYB%202011_Cadmium.pdf which clearly indicates there is shortfall for cadmium metal production by 2.1 million kgs... the cadmium bearing cakes being generated in these plants are being dumped un-systematically... damaging our flora and fona....

  • Cannot the Indian Universities / CSIR / TIFR be asked to find productive use for Cadmium?

  • The common practice is to recover cadmium (it is much in demand for batter industry). I am not sure whether they recover cadmium. Being an industrial waste it must be safely stored or disposed in TSDF. A right place where RTI with PCB/MoEF would be answerable.

  • cadmium metal bearing materials are generally disposed off in Municipal Solid waste by the Hazardous waste generating industries. If these industries are not disposing their hazardous waste to the Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility, then it means that the industry is disposing off these with the municipal solid waste which could be nearby the industry.
