Make in India Vs Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seems to be a promising mission to address the most pressing issue of waste pile up in urban as well as rural India. However, in contrast if Make in India programme encourages to set up more and more manufacturing units to enhance production, where will the waste generated go ??? As there is no "away" in "throwing away", the swachh bharat abhiyan will become a daunting challenge to achieve.

  • Dear Dr. Deeksha,

Appreciate you for bringing such a vital observation on perils of manufacturing sector growth due to Make in India. As it said, no pains no gains. So, certainly, there would be huge waste menace.

Human brain has such a wonderful power and if we really apply our brains, we can find a solution to the problem. Certainly, there are ample of solutions to tackle the waste menace as pointed out by others  : Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Mr. Ghosh has aptly conveyed we need to find ways on how "Waste can become Wealth". For ex : Biogas from the ETPs of starch, paper and sugar industries.

Others could be applying LCA could enable us to map the amount of emissions and environmental impact of the product. We can manage what we measure. So, if we measure the impacts of the product we can find a solutions to manage them well.

Dear Harjinderpal : I could empathise with you. As a fellow citizen, I suggest you to remember the famous quote : Ask not what the country has given you. Ask what you have given to the country.

I would like to ask the members to share their specific problems and challenges in their professions and environmental issues so we can see how may find better solutions in this group of wonderful professionals.

    Keep posting and evolving.

    Cheers!

  • Definitely  there are number of ways for waste management and also Cleaner Productions. Practically, how many of the existing industries do practice it. They all do exist only on papers. We lack in implementation.

  • WHO CARES, I DO RAINWATER WATER HARVESTING AND FACE QUESTIONS FROM THOSE WHO WANNA ADOPT THIS AT THEIR END , ABOUT THE ENCOURAGEMENT BY WAY OF SUBSIDIES OR HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT . WHEN I SAY THAT THERE IS NO SUCH HELP AVAILABLE PEOPLE ARE SHOCKED,  BUT THE FACCT IS THAT TILL  DATE I IN MY PERSONAL CAPACITY HAVE HELPED PEOPLE SAVE MORE THAN BILLIONS OF GALLONS OF RAINWATER BUT THERE IS NO WORD OF APPRECIATION FROM THE AUTHORITIES CONCEREND LEAVE ALONE SUBSIDIES.

  • Ideas are born great but since Indepe ndance red tapism has made the process of setting up industry here realy a nightmare due to the dozens of departments one has to deal for clearances which are not easy to come,  a recent example is the minning sector due to which existing manufacturing is suffering and will suffer if exemplary measures are not taken , in such a scenario which international player will dare to come forwrd to set up his base.

Regarding cleanliness we still are not following the reuse recycle funda to the hilt due to the above stated facts, because recycling needs clearences from different departments which are not easy to get other wise lots of minds would have joined hands in recyling the waste for utilities. l

  • The program now being taken up is not the right one. We must have holistic plan to utilize waste too. Just political propaganda can not clean our country. We must be aware, we must ensure fair wages to persons who keep our surrounding clean round the year. Let there e professional approach.

  • I agree with Sandhya HegdeIndresh N.

We must adopt Reduce, Reuse & Recycle concept with Make in India programme.

    Thanks!
