Guidelines for Storm Water Management

Dear Friends,

Every spell of rain brings localized water logging in towns, ofter described in local news papers as flood. We have found that the major cause is engineered structures like roads, drains and compound walls that block the free flow of storm water. Natural drainage paths are blocked, or restricted. This is often neglected by local authorities since there is no guidelines for storm water management. I feel that it is time for us to have proper storm water management guidelines, for quantity as well as quality.

    I agreed sir, we truly need a storm water management system, to minimize the pure rain water to get wasted as dirty, along with sewage water.
    well, i think it will come soon as their is an initiative of urban flooding after recent Delhi case and earlier Mumbai one.

    yes it now need the prime attention,In many cases the waste water and storm water go through the same drainage. mainly due to this plastic wastes are abstructingthe path of flow, this may leads for logging of water. we have to act on that by all means

    It could be done provided we have some national commission specializing the task. First things first like storm water collect all ideas irrespective of +ve or -ve. from that we may come to a solution path. I strongly feel the behavioral change within our society will play an important role.
    one of the first step is to sensitize the issue to the extent of the alarm and then maintain the tempo through a series of steps like awarness campaign, education, roadshow, fund raising, training and voluntering and networking with govt bodies to come up with a plan of action, execution, counter check with the effect and see whether it gives us the desired results and corrective actions. make this as a continuous process thus let all get involved directly or indirectly.

    This is a critical area requiring high attention. Reasons are mainly blocking the flow with dumping wastes, and even more, encroachments intruding inside the drains, or as in Mumbai, diverting the path of natural flow. Hence, maintenance /protection is important as the SWD construction. Integration with solid waste mgt would be of great help.

    Agreed, we can't predict the quantum of rainfall accurately but with better storm drainage system, atleast we can reduce its adverse impacts. This can happen only by private- public partnership.

    Yes, attention to be given on storm water management. As many cities are facing these types of problem like Delhi. However, proper intructions by the Govt. should be given to the private Developers and also local authorities to maintain storm water drains in and around their areas and also done proper runoff management.

    Yes, this area requires immediate attention. Most of the cities are now lacking a storm water drainage/management system. In many cases the waste water and storm water go through the same drainage. Decentralized water harvesting systems with constructed wetlands shall be considered wherever possible, since this system will help in solving the water crisis in future.

    Yes, this area need to be given priority by the local authorities. We at IndiaTrees are trying to help the drought prone areas of north bengal to save whatever the little rain water they get, flowing away from their land, as a part of our poverty alleviation programmes thru biodiversity programmes, would welcome specific/details how to help these water-starved areas of rural Bengal ....
