  • In cpcb guideline for greenbelt role of greenbelt is mentioned and in NEP'06, it is only proposed to increase the forest cover to 33%. Sector specific EIA manuals also mention greenbelt of adequate width. Earlier EC to industries mention 25% of project site for greenbelt. (eg., envfor.nic.in/news/aprjun03/ec-ind.doc) I find ref to 33% greenbelt as per CPCB guidelines in many reports (both EIA and compliance reports to EC) but the actual directive insisting this is not found. Can anyone please help!

  • Please see to CEA website on landuse for thermal power plant published during September 2010, where in the requirement has been specified. However, the 33% concept might have been  arised from the Coimabatore convention of MoEF during 1980s which specifies that as the forest cover of India  has been decreased by 33% hence, MoEF should devise a plan to cover the area by 33% again. Any way..... it is good to have a green belt but I suggest it is to be consiedered, implemented on carbon sink concept not as a mandatory requirement.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for information Sujata Sharma...but how many follow?

  • Sir, in National Environment Policy 2006, its written that about 33% area in and around the industrial area should be developed under greenbelt and its not necessary that 33% should be inside the industrial area, it can be outside the boundary of the plant area. There is no such circular or notification.
