  • for increasing rainfall plantation is needed. and rain water harvesting is done by two method rainwater storage or groundwater recharge.

  • For increasing Rain.....no idea, but for RWH I can definitely help you out with a beautiful solution. which does not require surface land, raises ground water table with each rain and conserve as much as 80% rain water of the catchment area. Stops water and soil run off, stops flood to great extent, cost effective, does not require any maintenance and a life time solution.

You are right Prof Suresh Kumar Sir , 1st priority is to increase rainfall in drought prone area ,then n then it would be possible to harvest water. there are many areas in our country waiting for 1st rain. it is also important to study the geographical and physiological conditions in the particular area. Thank you for the suggestions.

  • Sonal very relevant question in times like this when rain has failed states like Kerala,so well known for toretial rains,even upto as recent as 15-20 years back,leave alone my childhood days.The recent statistics reveal that there has been a preciptous fall over the decades,though some intervals of incessant rains as anomalous precipitation events are discernible in between,as part of extreme weather episodes associated with climate change.

    We normaly think that as mean sea temperatures and average atmospheric temperatures go up due to global warming,more moisture need to be driven up and what has gone up has to comedown.

    That logic does not work in the context of large systems like atmosphere and oceanic teleconnections,apparently[as some recent reports in SCIENCE and othe mainstream journals indicate].There is more evaporation now a days in winter than in summer due to heat and water diffusion through ocean currents which appear anomalously in oceans across the world,also linked to climate change,and ENSO effects.

    In landlocked areas,pan effect can cause local rainfall from condensation locally,though this does not happen in sea coasts-hence the relevance of large and small water tanks more in interior areas.

    The first few rains are very important for further rains associated with monsoons,in onset areas near to coasts like Kerala,which is now deficient.

    We have to understand the dynamics more scientifically.Some types of biomass and foliage in upper reaches of hill tops and mountainous areas are crucial to cooling leading to moisture condensation causing rains,in regions like Kerala,known for its biomass diversity,which has now largely declined due to deforestation and mono cultural plantations

  • Raising massive cashew plantation, with drip irrigation facility, can be tried.  This may need huge big investment and sustained efforts for 5 to 7 years.  This may not be possible without enlisting support from Govts., Corporates like Tatas, Reliance, Wipro, Infosis, ITC., etc., etc. Drought resisting, Fast growing, High yielding hybrid plants should be selected.

    When the plants grow, there will be enough shade to conserve soil moisture.  Inter cropping with leguminous plants like Arhar, Soya, etc., will help to improve the humus level of the soil .  This will need meticulous planning, very hard work, sincere efforts and curuption free atmosphere.  When the plantations grow & start yielding, they will become economically viable too.

    2. Making contour bandhs to check rain water run off.

    3. Digging soil percolation tanks to collect & store rain water. 

    4. Digging wells with provision for allowing rain water flow into it.

  • rain water harvesting needs to be implemented as an integral part of building and homes. garden landscaping for trapping water under walkways and channeling of water from rooftops which are at an angle are other ways.
    people who have experienced shortage of municipal water supply in their localities have also developed ingenious ways of water harvesting.
