Decentralized Bioremediation of drains

Dear all

Varanasi is famous for river Ganga, which is being polluted due to the discharge of several urban drains. I want a decentralised solution for drain water management so as to minimize the load on Sewage Treatment Plant due to their low capacity.

    Dear All,

    Varanasi or any other city in the country was developed naturally with human inhabitation suiting to culture and lifestyle. No body ever thought of a situation that these cities are facing now. Urban sprawl cannot be easily controlled, so is setting up infrastructure suitable for urban sprawl. If unattended, the hygiene of these localities will take a tall on the population (remember Surat) and our administrators and the public will become aware of the importance of waste water management.

    However, a lot can be done if the administration has the will. For the time being, ecological engineering is the best to treat waste water in urban sprawl. It involves livelihood generation, biomass production and better hygiene. The design should be appropriate to the climate, topography, water quality, hydraulic conditions etc.

    Yes Sir you are right the similar problem was created in the case study of Thams river. I hope you must go through the eng. methodology and apply the same in case of Ganga

    Dear Dr Tripathi,

    Your concern is genuine. But it requires a lot of space to grow plants in engineered wetlands. I think all the land along and downstream of the drains are occupied legally or illegally. First we have to identify low lying patches of land and convert them to designed wetlands. Grass can be grown, or even firewood bushes that have fuel value. Is the government interested in such an ecological intervention. Most of the agencies are more interested in selling machines for waste water treatment. The project launched to revitalize nullah in Punjab is one and the same.

    Recently i read in news papers (april last week) that MoEF /CPCB has adopted a bio tech for treating the polluted water in a famous channel  of River Sutlej. honble minister of MoEf inagurated it. You may get in tocuh with MoEf about this tech and it may help you to decide further.... based on its merits/demerits

    Dear Mr. Tripathi, It is good to see your concern for the environment. I had recently been to Varanasi and really loved the place.

     

    We have developed a model to carry out in-situ treatment of sewage in flowing drains. This model has been approved for a pilot by MoEF and our technical partners are IIT, Kanpur. We plan to use Bio-mimicry as a science to do this treatment. The advantages of this treatment would be:

    1. No infrastructure changes to the drains.

    2. No use of energy to clean the drains.

    3. Suppression of foul odour and vectors.

    4. Treatment cost < Rs 2000/- per MLD.
