Corporate Environment Policy

How does this policy effect your Organization?

"The voluntary Corporate Environment Policy (CEP) of the companies has been made mandatory, albeit indirectly, with a condition that the companies' will post environmental violations on their websites. The environment ministry has issued an internal circular directing its statutory committees for environment and forest clearances at the centre and the states to include corporate environment policy as a mandatory condition for clearing both public and private sector projects.

The Environment Appraisal Committee grants environment clearance whereas Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) clears projects in the forest areas. No company can set up a project in India without their mandatory approval.

"There is a need to integrate the environmental concerns including those related to forestry, wildlife and bio-diversity, wherever applicable into the main stream of the corporate policies," the ministry's internal circular dated April 26 said."

  • I agree with Prof. L. Ramakrishnan. No law can be a success until it is implemented. The govt. gets funds in name of environment protection and environment management but hardly 20% of those funds and the budget shown are actually put in this cause. The rest 80% goes in for the maintenance of their own lawns and not so energy conserving and highly polluting activities.
These funds should instead be distributed to between the local panchayats that still show some sign of dignity towards their work.

Unless there is a follow up on the implementation of the said Corporate Policy, the initiative is only an EYEWASH meant for an unknown audience. There are already many such papers of "concern and commitment" which have not been implemented and the statutory bodies do not have proper mechanisms and methods to ensure their implementation. In my opinion MOEF need not be prescriptive; it should be proactive and innovative in detecting deceit and protecting us from un-sustainable development.
