The decline in fish population in Coastal Tamil Nadu is a pressing problem since decades that not only affects the lives of lakhs of fishermen, but also the marine ecosystem. The apathy from the government has aggravated the problem. This video created by students of Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal highlights the key causes driving these changes, the extent of damage that has already been done, and provides few solutions for bettering the existing situation. Mentor:  Alark Saxena, Assistant Professor of Forestry, Northern Arizona University, USA

We are delighted to present the analysis and solutions to specific regional environmental issues from the Students of the incoming class at IIFM (2020).

. The incoming class was introduced to the concepts of critical thinking and systems thinking for environmental problem-solving through a short course on Critical and Systems thinking between September and October 2020.

Students from diverse educational and regional backgrounds were grouped to evaluate a region-specific environmental problem from a critical and holistic perspective. The groups independently chose their environmental problem. The diversity of environmental issues covered by the student groups is spread across the length and breadth of the country. A total of 8 hours of training over a period of a month was given to the student groups.

The students within their groups learned several critical and systems thinking techniques e.g. differentiating facts from claims, root cause analysis, identifying your own biases, mental mappings, understanding behavior over time, recognizing system feedback  and working in multi-disciplinary environments, etc.

The entire class was conducted online with students spread across the length and breadth of the country. Resultant analysis has been rewarding for the students and the faculty alike. On encouragement from several alumni and professional forums, select student groups have shown a willingness to share their findings in the broader community.

The students are excited to share these videos and will appreciate your feedback on how to make these presentations better.
