The EPEAT environmental rating system for electronics is coming to India.

Manufacturers have already begun the process of qualifying PCs and Displays, Imaging Equipment and Televisions for India. Information on products registered in the country will be publicly accessible in the second quarter of 2014.

EPEAT addresses elimination of toxic substances, use of recycled and recyclable materials, product design for recycling, product longevity, energy efficiency, corporate performance and packaging attributes. India will be the 43rd country where EPEAT product registration and verification services are available.

I'm very interested in connecting with purchasers and others in India to better understand current green electronics initiatives and how EPEAT can help support organizations' efforts to reduce the impact of ICT purchasing and operations.

As a purchaser, do you currently have any environmental performance requirements in your IT and electronics purchase contracts?

Will having a credible system in place to identify and compare electronics based on environmental performance be helpful to you?

Are you interested in learning more -through webcasts such as the one we are conducting with Paryavaran on February 10th, or through in-person events we will be conducting in India?

Consultants or environmental NGO reps (in India or abroad)- are you already familiar with EPEAT?

Are there ways we can work together to support your clients' or members' initiatives in the areas of greener manufacturing and purchasing?

  • Hi again Binanda - just wanted to make sure you had seen the recording I posted of a slide presentation in which I cover the details of the system. Thanks so much for your interest.

  • Hello Bijaya - Of course its critically important with any procurement system or standard to assess its scope, effectiveness and credibility. I can give you some information here, but encourage you to join the spreecast hosted by IEN next week - you can sign up on the Green Electronics Council page - above. On that webcast I can answer a lot of detailed questions.  In the meantime I can give you a very quick outline:

EPEAT, which stands for “Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool,” rates products on a lifecycle basis. The system was developed with support from the United States Environmental Protection agency and addresses the elimination of toxic substances, the use of recycled and recyclable materials, product design for recycling, product longevity, energy efficiency, corporate performance and packaging attributes. Manufacturers are required to register products in EPEAT on a country-by-country basis to ensure all product and service criteria are supported and verified for local markets. EPEAT covers 42 countries - 43 with the addition of India.

To qualify for EPEAT registration, a product must meet 23 to 33 required environmental performance criteria depending on the product category. Products achieve higher EPEAT ratings by meeting up to 30 additional optional criteria. Rating criteria are developed in public stakeholder consensus processes involving broad (and increasingly international) representation from the environmental, purchasing, research, governmental and manufacturing sectors.

Each year manufacturers participating in EPEAT must report their sales of EPEAT registered products. Using a lifecycle benefits calculator developed by US EPA, GEC estimates the beneficial impact of the products sold vs products that do not meet the system criteria. For example, the 143 million EPEAT-registered products sold worldwide in 2012 alone will, over their lifetime, contribute to major reductions in environmental impact. The benefits of purchasing these devices include:

    • Save more than 5.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity — enough to power 437,573 U.S. homes
    for a year
    • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.9 million metric tons — equivalent to taking more than 689,000 U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
    • Eliminate the disposal of more than 33,000 metric tons of hazardous waste — equivalent to the weight
    of 3 Eiffel Towers

  • what are the parameters, how effective it is? can u throw some light ?

  • Thanks Gopi - EPEAT has worked very well in 42 countries so far, but we always go into new countries very carefully and with an eye to supporting existing work  in green purchasing and environmentally sensitive design and delivery of products.

  • Let us wait and see
