PROFILE

The India Business Unit (BU) is one of the fastest growing business units in the ERM global portfolio and the second largest BU in APAC in terms of head-count. As such its performance is of critical importance globally, and in the APAC region:

The BU has circa 140 BU employees (8 partners). The geographic remit includes India and neighbouring South Asian countries (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan). There are offices in Delhi (Gurgaon), Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

The two largest practices in the BU are CSM (Contaminated Site Management) and IAP (Impact Assessment and Planning) with smaller but important growth practice in P&A (Performance and Assurance) and TS (Transaction Services). There are designated national leaders for each of the practice areas, who have responsibility for building practice communities, delivering success in winning major opportunities and technical quality.

Globally, ERM adopts a sector and Key Client Programme approach with a focus on oil and gas, chemicals, mining and power. For the India BU, chemicals and manufacturing comprise the largest client sectors, with power and mining representing significant growth potential going forward. The BU also has a local key client program and is expected to deliver focus and sales to these clients.

CURRENT CHALLENGES & REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintain aggressive growth in a diverse, highly competitive and cost-sensitive market. On the back of significant growth in recent years, ERM is already the dominant player amongst the multinational players operating in India;

  • Drive ongoing organisational change to ensure strong risk management and effective governance in a high growth environment;

  • Maintain ERM’s cultural identity and core values and enhance clarity around vision, strategy and expectations/ accountabilities as headcount and number of offices continue to grow.

  • Create a consistent, high performance culture across the Partnership and the business.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities

  • Health and safety leadership to build and maintain a strong H&S culture, systems and processes

  • Agreement and delivery of the strategic direction for the BU in terms of sustained, profitable business growth, practice development and operational excellence (in alignment with the ERM Global and APAC strategies)

  • Establishment of client targeting and business development focus areas and activities to support this, collaborating with sector and practice leads to understand commercial priorities at the Global and Regional level

  • Identification and leadership on recruitment of strategic hires to support the growth of the business

  • Implementation of a robust and sustainable talent management programme including Partner-in-training (PT), recruitment of staff, career development framework and top talent programmes

  • Development and monitoring performance targets for each team, direct reports and the Partnership generally including Balanced Scorecards (using global templates) that focus Partners on key strategic priorities

  • Application of ERM governance procedures, ensuring that these are well understood and adhered to across the business, to include Anti-Bribery and Corruption, other risk management tools, the use of ERM business processes and supporting systems including financial systems (GMS), sales management system (Salesforce), safety management system, and human resources systems (Workday, Cornerstone, Taleo/ Avature) and procedures

  • Management of client and other key risks through interaction with clients and key internal personnel (e.g. Law Department, Commercial Directors, etc)

  • Timely completion of business cycle activities including performance reviews (mid year and annual), promotions (including PT, Partner and Technical Director promotions), bonus allocations, salary reviews, and budgeting (annual and quarterly reforecast)

  • Preparation and execution of a Sustainability Action Plan for the BU, linked to APAC and Global objectives

  • Active participation in the RMT and SLT to support and lead (as appropriate) Regional and Global initiatives

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Depth and Breadth of Leadership Experience – across what we recognise as a 3 dimensional organisation; outside the BU’s geography and/or ERM would be a bonus. This has to include a strong track record of profitable growth, full P&L responsibility and preferably time as an MP for a material (sustainability) consulting business (within or outside of ERM).

  • Depth and Breadth of Consulting Experience – the BU is among the fastest growing at ERM and the leader needs to understand the key risks and opportunities across all practices, demonstrate deep experience in at least one core practice and a good understanding of other ERM practices.

  • Clear, Articulate and Passionate Communicator with Presence and Poise on Stage – the leader of the BU needs to have the communication skills to engage with a growing partnership Group, inspire a group of talented PTs and 140+ staff across the BU; actively participate in the RLT/RMT and collaborate with other Partners in APAC and the SLT; and from time to time interact with the Executive Committee, Clients and groups outside of ERM.

  • Ability to Empower, Delegate and Create Change – the leader of the BU needs to be able to delegate effectively to enable others in the business to take responsibility for key activities, to create opportunities for development for up-and-coming leaders and to hold people accountable, ultimately delivering a high performance business.

  • Identify and Develop Senior Talent – within ERM and increasingly outside of ERM, including Partners / PTs, group hire and acquisition targets and the ability to implement and execute a strong talent recruitment, induction and personal development programme for senior staff and Partners.

  • Strong Collaboration Skills – in particular to be leveraged with the Managing Partners of other businesses, Practices and Sectors in the Region, recognising and being sensitive to the role India BU has to play in the APAC Region and elsewhere across ERM.

  • Understanding of Sustainability – ability to articulate sustainability in the consulting context and an understanding of the relevant service offerings in this area is desirable.

  • Experience with Team Hires – The Indian market presents an opportunity to hire groups/ teams of professionals from amongst the competition and there is potential for these to accelerate ERM’s organic growth. Experience with identifying targets, executing team hires and managing successful integration is desirable.

ESSENTIAL CHARACTER BEHAVIOURS

  • Decisive, Confident and Tough-minded – after the right amount of consultation and engagement.

  • Ambitious, Committed and Hardworking – including the ability to spend as much as 40% of time on the road, with occasional travel abroad.

  • Approachable and Open – at all levels, from the C1 to the Chairman to Clients being served across the organisation

  • Appetite for Excellence and High Performance – is driven to succeed and achieve operational, client and delivery excellence, and is unrelenting in ensuring that the Partners in the business have a similar purpose.
