Wind Velocity Data for Selected Cities in India

The wind velocity data for some selected cities in India is available as “Windrose Diagram” at http://windrose.indianclimate.org. The site shows a frequency distribution over 16 directions and 7 predefined wind speed ranges. Wind data from 2009 onwards has been used which is daily updated.

A windrose is an illustrative way of presenting the wind velocity data used by meteorologists (including Air Pollution Meteorologists and Atmospheric Dispersion Modellers) to give a short and snappy view of how wind speed and direction are typically distributed at a particular location. Using a polar coordinate system of gridding, the frequency of winds over a long time period are plotted by wind direction, with colour bands showing wind ranges. The directions of the rose with the longest spoke show the wind direction with the greatest frequency.
