Introducing Phytorid Technology

Dear Mr. Rakesh I would like to introduce you Phytorid Technology developed by NEERI. This technology runs on the principal of Natural wetland.

Some of the key features are,

This Natural Treatment Technology is ‘Low Cost Technology’ with advantages like ‘Negligible sludge production’, ‘Small footprint’ and can be constructed in various dimensions as per the land availability
¨ The system is based on the specific natural ‘Wetlands plants’ like Typha, Scirpus, Cyprus, Canna serving purpose of filtration, oxygen supply at depth along with aesthetics and only needs to be prune periodically hence ‘No Maintenance Technology’
¨ The hydraulics is maintained on gravity and below gravel surface hence, ‘Odour and Insect Free’ treatment and ‘No Power Required’
¨ The system is ‘Simple to Construct’
¨ Water can be ‘Reuse’ with just 2-3% losses for irrigation and flushing purpose.

  • Dear sir,

My name is Amit kumar (M.tech in Env. engg. form Pondicherry univercity). I am much interested to know about these types of sustainable technologies in wastewater treatment, which is cost effective and efficient. It will more feasible for poor or developing countries. I tried to download the attachment regarding Phytorid technology, but failed. so, kindly if u send this attachment on my mail-id- amitenvironment2010@gmail.com, I will be highly thankful to you.

Phytorid technology, which u described in your comment, the  technology, named SHEFROL, based on Hydroponics (Sheet Flow Root Level-was also my M.Tech project) is somewhat similar to the PHYTORID technology, under which wastewater treatment done with the help of aquatic plants. The wastewater which I treated by this technology was university wastewater . I personally designed the bioreactor under which I got 70-80% removal efficiency in terms of BOD5, COD, TSS, TDS, TKN & TP removal. I used Water-hyacinth, Marsilia quadrifolia & Sesillis plant species.Under this technology wastewater got treated at the root level of used aquatic plants . It is open bio-reactor  which required  trenches of engineered length, width and height (these all depends on the quality & quantity of wastewater) covered by HDPE sheets. Wastewater is flowing through the roots level of aquatic plants on HDPE sheets. micro-organisms associated with the root zone of aquatic plants used the contaminants of wastewater for their metabolism & aquatic plant used the nitrogen and phosphorus for their growth.   It also need's little maintenance and cost. The flow of wastewater maintained via terrain level of the land used. The most uniqueness of this system is its very less HRT approximately 3-4 hours.

If I will get input's from you, then i can suggest to optimize the SHEFROL system. Now I am not related with this project, but once upon a time I also made my full effort in optimization of the system.

    Thank's & Regard's
