Soil contamination

Hi all, wanted to know more about Contamination of soil, if Hazardous wastes stored "openly" on the land. What are the parameters required to check? and how it can be checked for compliance purpose.? What are the standards? that need to compare to know contamination? Are the guidelines available by MOEF or CPCB?

And, if soil found contaminated, then what will be remedial measures for disposal of soil?

Kindly, throw light on it.Thanks in advance..

  • Hi!

Could you please specify the types of hazardous waste stored? Perhaps this is the first piece of information you need. Then perhaps it will help to know how much and for how long.

CPCB has some guidelines on operation of CHWTSDFs and operation of incinerators (see new reports tab in CPCB website). However no such industry-centric guidelines exist to my knowledge. Have you checked the Hazardous Waste Rules? Because Sch. I, II and III of HW Rules lay down constituents, and their respective threshold concentrations, beyond which these waste become hazardous. Perhaps you should focus on these parameters.

Affected soil needs to be disposed off in a CHWTSDF, yet to come across any solution as such. However the extend of such disposal could be identified only through investigating how deep the contamination has gone. For this you may apply visual inspection, say x no. bores / acre, 3 samples / bore, one at 1.5 ft, one at 3 ft ant one at 5 ft, and so on.

    Hope you understand.

    Regards.

  • Hi,

I think you have to start from scratch. First you should know what is the hazardeous waste stored.

Then find out how the waste is in contact with soil.

Then take composite and radom soil samples and first check with Heavy metal analysis.

There are standards so first you have to do characterization and then analysis of soil sample and based on that a remediation technology can be designed.

    We work on Vermiremediation.

SARITSA FOUNDATION and we are working with the people and to make them aware of the Environmental maintenance & Up keeping.  We will be highly obliged to have deeper knowledge of SOIL CONTAMINATION as we are working with villagers directly concerned on the matter. We would be happy to let them know about SOIL CONTAMINATION.
