I just received a complete brochure of all the Publications by Kalpavriksh. Here are some highlights. The complete brochure is attached. About Kalpavriksh: Kalpavriksh Environmental Action Group is a voluntary group working on environmental education, research, campaigns, and direct action. It began in 1979, with students’ campaign to save Delhi’s Ridge Forest area from encroachments and destruction. Starting with these roots in local action, Kalpavriksh has moved on to work on a number of local, national, and global issues. Kalpavriksh is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1980 (No.17439). It is based in Delhi and Pune/ over the years it has brought out a number of well-researched, nominally priced publications on various issues of environment and development. ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS Treasured Islands: An Environmental Handbook for Teachers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Sunita Rao, 1996; Revised Edition 1999, Hindi Version, 2000 The Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India are one of the world’s finest examples of a tropical island ecosystem. Endowed with diverse habitats ranging from rain forests to the open ocean, they are also home to ancient hunter-gatherer tribes and a mosaic of people settled here from the Indian mainland. This handbook is aimed at teachers of the islands to help them initiate environmental awareness among students in schools. It can also be easily adapted for use in other island and coastal ecosystems. This book contains basic information on oceans, coral reefs, beaches, mangroves, rain forests, indigenous tribes, human impact on the environment and checklists of selected mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, coral and plants. Generously illustrated with drawings and colour plates, the handbook also contains full descriptions of 45 activities for teachers to do with the students. These include many action tips to help save the islands from the threats they face. pp. 94, Fully illustrated, only photocopies available Treasured Islands : Poster A colorful poster with photographs giving a glimpse of the natural ecosystems explaining some ecological and social aspects, all superimposed on a map of the islands. out of stock Troubled Islands: Writings on the Indigenous Peoples and the Environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India Pankaj Sekhsaria, 2002 Over the years there has been a reasonable amount of academic work on the hunter-gatherer communities and the fragile environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At the same time, however, the threat to the survival of these small communities has intensified, as development policies that are completely insensitive to their needs and that of the local environment have been conceived, formulated and implemented here. Little, if any, research or publication in the mainstream Indian media has been seen on this aspect of the islands in the last few decades. Troubled Islands is a compilation of articles since 1998 by Pankaj Sekhsaria on precisely these issues. It is perhaps the most detailed account of recent developments in the islands and is made up of articles that were first published in leading Indian publications that include Frontline, The Hindu, Economic and Political Weekly and Sanctuary Asia. They look at some of the key issues faced by the islands and the islanders today and follow the major developments that have taken place here in the last few years. Published with LEAD-India Pp100 BIODIVERSITY Conserving Life: Implications of the Biodiversity Convention for India. 1995 The Convention on Biological Diversity was signed by over 170 countries and came into force in early 1994 having three major thrusts: conservation of the earth’s variety of plants, animals and micro-organisms, the sustainable utilisation of biological resources and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from such utilisation. This first detailed analysis of the Convention, offers an analysis of how the Convention relates to India and by extension to other Third World countries and what its implications are for development and conservation policy. Specific issues like wildlife - human conflict and its possible resolution, reorienting agriculture towards indigenous crop and livestock diversity, threats posed by the emerging patenting of life forms etc., with a story of a Himalayan village which has already achieved what the Convention aims at are dealt with in separate essays. pp.93, only photocopies available Delhi Based Activities and for KV Publications: 134, Tower 10 Supreme Enclave, Mayur Vihar Phase I Delhi-110091 India Tel: 011-22753714 Email: kvdelhi@vsnl.net Pune Based Activities and for KV Publications: Apt. 5, Shree Dutta Krupa, 908 Deccan Gymkhana, Pune 411 004 India Tel/Fax No: 91-20-25654239 Email: kvbooks@vsnl.net Website: www.kalpavriksh.org
