Project Vacancy Notification (MCBT/TSA- Indian Turtle Prog-09/01)
Madras Crocodile Bank Trust/Center for Herpetology (MCBT) is a premiere autonomous
herpetological research center and zoo operating under the Central Zoo Authority,
Ministry of Environment and Forest. The center is implementing various conservation
projects targeting endangered herp taxa and their habitats across India.
1. A vacancy for Assistant Project Officer-(Equivalent to Junior Research Fellow)-
Conservation Education is open with the Indian Turtle Conservation Program.
The Indian Turtle Conservation Program is a MCBT initiative funded by the
Turtle Survival Alliance (turtlesurvival.org).
2. The position is primarily designed to seek long term conservation solutions for
endangered freshwater turtles (and crocodiles) through engaging various
communities. Activities include education and awareness, revitalizing traditional
conservation systems and beliefs and upgrading the socio-economic status of local
inhabitants.
3. The position is expected to commence on 1 October 2009 and will be based
in Etawah, UP, northern India (close to National Chambal Sanctuary; 300 km east
of Delhi with direct train access). The candidate will be required to travel to other
projects in northern India.
4. This is purely a temporary position initially for one year, which might extend or
terminate according to the candidate’s performance and available resources.
5. The candidate will be encouraged to register for a PhD program related to the
above work.
6. This position doesn’t give any opportunity to claim for any permanent position
either with MCBT or the Turtle Survival Alliance.
7. Salary is negotiable as per the candidate’s skills and relevant experience. Field
allowance is admissible as per the field activities and work plan.
8. Candidates with a minimum of a Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/
Zoology/Environmental Science/ Environmental Management/Resource
Management / Social Science will be preferred, but candidates with exceptional
work experience and limited formal training may also apply.
9. Working knowledge of computers especially MS Office, Hindi, English, writing
skills and experience managing conservation projects/office work is an advantage.
The candidate will be expected to handle freshwater reptiles and therefore
experience in animal handling is desirable.
