Programme Officer - Tiger Conservation

WWF-India, the country’s largest environmental conservation NGO with a national branch network is looking for individuals of exceptional ability and resourcefulness who are willing to contribute towards conservation of nature of the country. WWF India’s tiger conservation programme covers most major tiger landscapes in India including the Terai, Assam, Sunderbans, Central India, and the Western Ghats. In addition, WWF India also has tiger conservation programmes or supports tiger conservation in other important parts of the country such as Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Orissa. Our initiatives on tiger conservation include corridor restoration, species monitoring, community participation in conservation, education/awareness, mitigation of human-wildlife conflict and policy/advocacy. While most of the work at the field level is undertaken by our landscape and project teams, WWF India is looking for a committed and motivated individual with an understanding of tiger conservation issues to work with the senior management in New Delhi to provide back-up and support to the field teams particularly on monitoring, policy/advocacy, communications, fundraising and networking. WWF also has a global tiger conservation initiative and the selected candidate will be expected to liaise with the international WWF network on tiger conservation issues. Key tasks and responsibilities Coordinate with field teams in tiger landscapes to identify and help with implementation of conservation priorities Assist with development of ecological/species monitoring protocols and collection of baseline data in tiger landscape Coordinate with field teams to identify major policy issues that need attention and liaise with senior management to address these at state and central levels Work closely with the species and landscapes communications manager to provide technical input into communicating the results and impacts of WWF India’s tiger conservation initiatives Assist with raising funds from a range of donors to support tiger conservation programmes in India Represent WWF India at national and international meetings on tiger conservation as required Liaise with the WWF global network and the Tiger Network Initiative as required and delegated by the senior management Assist with development of research priorities and partnerships for tiger conservation Assist with reporting to donors on existing tiger conservation programmes of WWF-India Network with other NGOs working on tiger conservation and develop joint strategies and position statements on conservation policy and practice. Qualifications & Experience Minimum post-graduate degree in wildlife biology, ecological sciences, natural resource management or a related field At least five years’ experience of working on conservation programmes at field and/or policy levels Good understanding of national and global issues in tiger conservation – both policy and practice Excellent written and communication skills in English with the ability to write independent reports Ability to work independently and also with cross cutting teams – in particular with teams working in the field Strong, demonstrated commitment to conservation – ability to undertake advocacy on behalf of tiger conservation will be an asset The position will be based at WWF-India Secretariat, New Delhi. Remuneration will be competitive with Indian NGO pay scales and will depend upon candidate’s experience levels and the overall WWF-India salary structure. WWF-India does not provide housing, telephone or vehicle facilities.
