India’s freshwater systems and river basins are in a crisis. WWF-India, the country’s largest conservation organisation seeks to address the challenges faced by our threatened river basins through linking research and field programmes with strong policy and advocacy. We are looking for a committed and dynamic leader to manage our existing programme “For a Living Ganga” and to scale up our water policy, water footprint and water stewardship work in other river basins including the Indus, Godavari and Brahmaputra.

The Living Ganga Programme encompasses a holistic approach of addressing the numerous threats to the river including unsustainable hydropower development, excessive water withdrawals, industrial, agricultural and domestic pollution and climate impacts. Pioneering and exciting work has been initiated on developing environmental flow recommendations for the river, identifying critical ecological areas to inform hydropower planning, piloting bio-remediation to address water pollution, and undertaking climate vulnerability assessments in the basin. 

The Programme Leader will have the opportunity to work with cross cutting teams within WWF India and with a diverse international team of multi-disciplinary experts. He/she will be responsible for ensuring smooth working relationships with NGO partners, research and policy institutions and government agencies. Donor liaison, effective monitoring and reporting as well as representing WWF India at national and international fora will also be responsibilities of this position. He/she will also have the opportunity to lead WWF India into new and emerging areas of water conservation and management, including water footprint accounting, influencing business & industry, as well as emerging links between water and climate change.

This is a senior management position and will report to the Programme Director. The incumbent will manage a dedicated team of professionals as well as work closely with other senior managers within WWF India in the design and delivery of planned programmatic activities. The Programme Leader will also be expected to work closely with the Secretary General and CEO, WWF India and with our senior colleagues in the international WWF network.

Interested candidates should possess a record of demonstrated leadership and delivery of integrated programmes. Knowledge on national water policies, linkages with central and state water departments and experience in working on water sector projects is essential. Experience in policy analysis, policy dialogue and advocacy is desirable. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, the ability to manage a diverse team and strong commitment to WWF’s mission and values are also essential.

Remuneration will be competitive with Indian NGO pay scales and will depend upon the candidate’s experience levels and the overall WWF-India salary structure. WWF-India does not provide housing, telephone or vehicle facilities.
