to
Engage Research Fellows at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage nine (09) research fellows [01 Research Associate (RA), 07 Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and 01 Technical Assistant (TA)] through a Walk-in-Interview on Tuesday, 29th September 2009. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.
DETAILS OF PROJECTS and POSITIONS
Project # 1
Title, details of position and duration
Research Laboratory.
(01 – RA)
Duration: Initially for a period of one year.
Essential Qualification
Ph.D degree in Zoology/Botany/Wildlife Sciences/Environmental Sciences/ Forestry/Experimental Biology/Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/Social Sciences from a recognized University. Those who have published their work in peer reviewed journals and shown evidence of capability to do independent research work will have a preference.
Desirable Qualification
(1) Adequate experience from any reputed laboratory in using advance analytical techniques for plant, animal, soil and water samples.
(2) Experience in handling and maintenance of various laboratory analytical equipments (AAS, HPLC, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer etc.) and operational knowledge of various computer software(s).
Description of Work
The work involves field visits and laboratory analysis for plant, animal, soil and water samples and also teaching advanced analytical techniques.
Project # 2
Title, details of position and duration
Monitoring Source Population of Tiger in Kanha Tiger Reserve.
(01 – JRF)
Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Life Science/Zoology/Botany/Forestry/ Environ-mental Science or Veterinary Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Research experience in wildlife specially carnivores. M.Sc. dissertation on a relevant topic with experience in use of telemetry. Exposure to techniques of camera trapping, distance sampling, mark-recapture population estimation, habitat use analysis, ability to work on GIS is desired.
Description of Work
The research involves camera trapping, and distance sampling, to estimate and monitor tiger and prey populations in the Kanha Landscape. Modern technological tools like satellite and GPS telemetry will be used to study habitat use, ranging patterns, behaviour and dispersal of tigers.
Project # 3

Monitoring Source Population of Tiger in Corbett Tiger Reserve.
(01 – JRF)
Duration: Three years.

Population Estimation and Ecology of the Tiger in the Sundarbans.
(02 – JRFs)
Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification
MSc in Wildlife Science/Life Science/Zoology/Botany/Forestry/Environmental Science or Veterinary Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Research experience in wildlife specially carnivores, preferably tigers. M.Sc. dissertation on a relevant topic with experience in use of telemetry. Exposure to techniques of camera trapping, distance sampling, mark-recapture population estimation, sign surveys, occupancy modeling, habitat use analysis, ability to work on GIS is desired.
The candidate should be able to stay on a boat for several days and know swimming.
Description of Work
The research involves estimating and monitoring the population of tigers and prey populations in the Sundarbans. Modern technological tools like satellite and GPS telemetry will be used to study habitat use, ranging patterns, behaviour and dispersal of tigers.
Project # 5
Title, details of position and duration
Ecology, behaviour and interaction of highly dense populations of sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) and human-sloth bear conflict in Jessore wildlife sanctuary, Gujarat and Mount Abu wildlife sanctuary, Rajasthan.
(01 – JRF)
Duration: Up to March 2011.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Zoology/Wildlife Science/Animal Science/Environment Science/ Life Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Experience on large carnivore/herbivore research, habitat evaluation, estimating prey abundance, and food habit analysis and human-wildlife conflict. Candidates having knowledge of Hindi and/or local language of Rajasthan/Gujarat to interact with local community, and having computer software will be preferred.
Description of Work
The project aims to study ecology of sloth bear, human-sloth bear conflict and management aspects in Jessore Wildlife Sanctuary and Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary. Information on land cover, landuse, vegetation composition and structure, den distribution, habitat, food habits and ranging pattern of sloth bears, impacts of biotic pressures, and socio-economic impacts of menace on rural community will be collected. Sloth bear proof power fencing will be developed.
Project # 6
Title, details of position and duration
Development & maintenance of studbook for selected endangered faunal types in Indian zoos.
(01 – TA)
Duration: One year.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Zoology/Life Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Candidates with functional knowledge of computer operation/software will be preferred.
Description of Work
The project involves collection and computation of pedigree data of selected species from various identified zoos across country and would involve field visits.
Assist in maintenance and updation of studbooks of select endangered faunal types as per project requirement.
Project # 7
Title, details of position and duration
Wildlife Crime Scenario in India: Perspective based on analysis of wildlife offence cases referred to the Wildlife Institute of India.
(01 – JRF)
Duration: Nine months.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Wildlife Science/Zoology/Forensic Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Experience in wildlife science or knowledge of different wildlife species, computer skills for data entry and analysis related to wildlife trade and poaching related issues.
Description of Work
Research is required to undertake analysis of data related to wildlife offences and trade and collection of such information from different state departments.
Project # 8
Title, details of position and duration
A study on sympatric carnivores (tiger, leopard and wild dog) in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India.
(01–JRF)
Project Duration: Up to January 2011.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Forestry/Environmental Science from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Desirable Qualification
Experience in prey and predator population estimation, GIS and Remote Sensing, quantification techniques and computer knowledge.
Description of Work
1. To estimate density, distribution, group size and composition of prey species of sympatric carnivores (tiger, leopard and dhole).
2. To study the food habits and prey selectivity of sympatric carnivores.
3. To estimate the population of the sympatric carnivores.
4. To study the distribution of sympatric carnivores and their prey species with specific reference to anthropogenic pressure
5. To develop conservation action plan for these sympatric carnivores.
GENERAL:
Candidate for the position of RAs should be below 40 years of age and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. For JRF/TA, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 25th September 2009. Upper age limit for JRF/TA may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
Selected candidates for the position of Research Associate (RA) will be paid consolidated emoluments as per the norms of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India depending upon professional qualifications and experience in any one of the following categories RA-I (Rs.16,000/month), RA-II (Rs.17,000/month); RA-III (Rs.18,000/month).
Selected candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month and the selected candidate for the position of Technical Assistant will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 6,400/- per month.
All research personnel may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project.
The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Tuesday, 29th September 2009 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun.
Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.
The `Walk in Interview’ will be conducted on Tuesday, 29th September 2009 and the registrations of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.
Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.
Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.
Two way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
