Field Course in Tropical Biology and Conservation

This course is an introduction to tropical forests dynamics andconservation designed for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduatestudents.

Format: Course activities will be split between lecture and fieldexercises. Students will participate in on-going experiments toestablish long term monitoring efforts. Students will design independentprojects. The course concludes with a symposium, where students presentresults of course activities and compete for the AFEC best researchaward.

Where:  The course convenes in Kunming (capital city of Yunnan Province,China) after which we move to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Gardennear the Lao – Burma borders. The field work will take place in Mengsongnear the Burma border, an area with a variety of rice fields, teaplantations, secondary forests and magnificent primary forest.

Topics: Tropical Ecology, Eco-Physiology, Taxonomy, EvolutionaryEcology, Plant and Animal Interactions, Biodiversity,  ConservationBiology, Invasive Species and more!

Instructors: The various topics will be taught by professors fromseveral institutes including The Chinese Academy of Sciences, LeidenUniversity, Texas Tech University, Netherlands Center for Biodiversity,Kunming Institute of Zoology.
