Rapid growth in the use of palm oil is spurring deforestation in
Indonesia, as primary forests are being cleared to expand areas under
palm oil plantation. India is now the world's largest importer of palm
oil from Indonesia. It is essential that the link between palm oil and
deforestation is broken, in order to prevent further forest clearing.
To achieve this we need to maintain and increase pressure on the Indian
industry and government to support a moratorium on peat land conversion
and deforestation in Indonesia, and stop purchasing palm oil linked to
deforestation.

You will be required to undertake the following activities in India to support our global campaign to stop
deforestation in Indonesia and achieve the main objectives of
generating support in India for a moratorium on peat land conversion
and deforestation in Indonesia, and getting buyers to stop purchasing
palm oil that is linked to deforestation.


  1. Develop a good understanding of the campaign issue, its links to India and the campaign goals in India - must be able to
    independently write briefs, handle public speaking engagements(press
    meets, conferences etc.)
  2. Identify relevant public pressure groups e.g. industry groups, trade unions, think tanks, public interest
    groups, NGOs and develop and implement strategies to engage them to
    publicly support the campaign demand.
  3. Identify and conduct lobby meetings with relevant corporate and government departments linked to palm oil
    imports -conduct/commission back-ground research, monitor external
    developments and adjust campaign plans from time to time in
    consultation with line manager.
  4. Work with the Greenpeace Media team to create public pressure through the media- this includes writing or recommending relevant writers on the campaign issue.
  5. Work with Greenpeace research team to identify and plug knowledge and research gaps on the issue.

Team

The campaigner will report to an experienced Senior
Campaigner in Greenpeace India. He/she will also work closely with
campaign staff in our International offices (Amsterdam & South East
Asia).


Resources

The campaigner shall have access to

  1. Our campaign support teams in Media, Communications and Political Unit to enable him/her to deliver on the campaign objective
  2. A substantive campaign budget managed by the Senior Campaigner
  3. A laptop, data card and mobile phone connection with official costs covered as per our policies
Required knowledge/skills and experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of economics, politics, business and trade in the palm oil industry in India
  • Belief in the power of non-violent creative confrontation to expose
    environmental problems and force change, i.e. belief in the Greenpeace
    mission
  • Ability to think out-side the box and develop strategies and tactics for the campaign
  • Demonstrable investigative research skills
  • Experience in making presentations, public speaking and networking with industry and government officials
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and fluency with Hindi
  • Willingness to play multiple roles; researching, lobbying, managing, presenting etc.
  • Ability to operate and lead under pressure and in challenging situations
  • Experience in campaigning and activism is preferred, but not essential
Working hours & travel:

The position is based at the Greenpeace India head
office in Bangalore. On occasion, you might be required to travel to
other cities/countries. Travel expenses shall be covered as per
standard Greenpeace India policies.

The pace of work is often hectic, and whilst every
effort is made to maintain reasonable office hours, the candidate
should be willing to work longer hours.
