SBR Vs MBR for sewage treatment plant

Team,

Need your input on the below requirment. currently we are planning to modify(augment) existing STP with activated sludge treatment with capacity of 74 KLD to 100 KLD. Need your input to decide which is best SBR or MBR or any other technique........

Could you please share your expertise

  • SBR will give you slightly higher quality effluent with mostly stabilised sludge when treating domestic sludge compared to ASP. But It requires more power for the higher DO maintenance with no clarifier (secondary).  MBR shall be even costly but with very high quality effluent that can be used for variety of purpose based on your recycle/reuse needs. You can always go for SBR if space requirement is a crucial factor.

  • SBR or MBR are only phase separation techniques.

Since ur STP is AST, let me assume that

    1. your effluent is having low BOD & obviously low MLSS.

    2. Quantity is relatively low (already mentioned)

Under such case, SBR itself serve better.

If ur MLSS is high, u have space constrains, u plan to use treated water, don't want use tertiary treatment like polyelectrolytes, etc. then MBR is better.

  • you are discussing with two different technologies entirely different from your current flow line. 1. Try MBBR by just adding media in aeration tank if it is working on diffuser system.

    2. Add separator like DAF just before the aeration. Treat sludge anaerobically.
