IEN Members,

What was the most sustainable carbon offset project that you were involved in? Which projects fare better than the other and are sustainable in the long run?

Do share with us your nuggets of wisdom for companies willing to sponsor Carbon offset projects in India. What should they look out for before choosing a carbon offsetting project in India?

    Thanks Srikanth,

Let me wish you success in developing many such projects.

    Hi CK,

    Appreciate your queries.

This is one of my passionate areas.

The most sustainable projects contribute to the community for example the cookstove projects and water purification projects.  More than 2 billion people across the world use firewood/biomass a cooking fuel and to boil the drinking water. Such projects are eligible to get the high value under the Gold Standard certification programs. I had the privilege to work on 10-12 Gold Standard projects which are sustainable. To give you a brief, these projects are fetching a better carbon price (GS VER) of about 5-10 USD compared to 2-3 USD for a renewable energy projects. Hence, it is very clear, the buyers are interested to purchase carbon offsets from such projects that contribute to the community and environment.

One of the best projects is treadle pump project in India. I was touched by stories of the villagers on how these pumps have improved their lifestyle in the rural areas in West Bengal when I met them as a GHG auditor. I really felt blessed to work on this project.

I noticed solar irrigation pumps, lanterns projects. There are a few young and enthusiastic entreprepreneurs working on such wonderful projects that are really sustainable and helping the rural people.

Mostly, these projects are sponsored by foreign companies. Indian companies would be investing as part of the CSR 2% mandatory spending.

That's great! I emailed you seperately on this. Let's get started.
  • Certainly we would be happy to the idea. We work closely with Department of Science and Technology, and am a member of National Programme on Carbon Sequestration Research (NPCSR), DST, Govt. of India. Now we are in discussion with Industries like NTPC for showcasing this in large scale with much more engineering and scientific capabilities.

    Thank you Sundaram,

We would love to work with you to showcase your projects on our Global Learning School platform.

  • Our Research Centre is working on algae based carbon sequestration and effluent treatment project. We have successfully scaled up the laboratory work to the level of 1000 litres per day pilot scale facility. This facility is running successfully in the premises of M/s. EID Parry Limited, Nellikuppam. Now we are addressing further scaling up and process intensification for more CO2 sequestration and more algal biomass production. We also work on effective utilization of algal biomass for various uses, including biogas production.
