Copper Wire Rusting

Dear All, I visited wiring company and they have a problem of Copper Wire Rusting. The wires turn black or green after some time(4-5 days). We monitored Ambient Air and parameters are within the stipulated norms. Further they are also keeping temperature under control and monitoring humidity regularly. It would be a great help if someone could let me know the exact reason of the same and what could be the possible solution. Thanks and Regards

  • Dear All, thanks a lot for your replies, suggestions. It will really help me. Thanks once again.

Lets keep interacting and working together.....

  • Dear Mr Pathak,

It requires a look in to processing conditions and trace constituents in ambient air.

  • Wire drawing is a process where you have to increase the temperature of the process. With increased surface area copper and all metals as usual react with the gases present in the atmosphere as enlightened by other people.

To prevent this happen the drawing process can be followed by annealing and then application of transparent and ultrathin sheathing is also provided. Probably the industry where you visited, they are drawing wires from scraps where the quality of the input itself is not expected to be consistent and at times different compositions of metals will have a different character when subjected to the atmosphere.

Beyond this this will be a problem of a metallurgist and not environmental professionals.

    Regards.

  • Interesting problem. Usually such a problem occurs when hydrogen sulfide gas is present in the copper wire's vicinity. Check for sources of the gas please. Usually it is coming from a nearby landfill or waste pit containing organic waste
  • Our network We CAN Control Corrosion in India, an open source Knowledge Management Platform for Corrosion Management can help you to solve this problem. I would like to have more details. When did they notice this problem? Is it perennial? Where is this plant located? What is the basis for stipulated norms? Is it based on the conditions originally set at the time of design/running the factory? What are all the parameters and levels you have considered for analysis?

I am putting this for further discussion with our technology group on Linkedin. We are presently discussing Corrosion Problems in India. If you wish you can follow us through the following links. I am providing these links to aid you in following up the conversation.

  • Could yo please let me know which all parameters you monitored and what was their concentrations as they might be within the stipulated norms, but their concentration may be just enough to bring about the chemical reactions and I presume these norms are not specific to the copper wire rusting.

Further reduction in their level might solve your problem.

A complete understanding of the process, handling etc. and chemical composition of the environment of the surrounding is required.

  •

    Sir,

    There are two reasons.

    Firstly,copper is not pure

Secondly, copper or copperwire should not come into contact with hands .

What are the parameters analysed in Ambient Air ?

If at all water is to be used in the process ,then only demineralised water has to be used since mettalic impurities or chlorides or sulphates present in the water creates this problem.Free oxygen present in the atmosphere creates this type of problems.

  •

    Sir,

Copper wire rusting is nothing but oxidising taking place in the work room.Humidity and temperature do not have any role in this.

I would like to know what are air parameters analysed?

    There are two main reasons.

Firstly copper wire is not pure.

Secondly ,if copper wiring process requires water wash then they have to use demineralised water only.Water should not contain either salts or minerals.Any sulphates or chlorides in water  or free oxygen present in the atmosphere copper gets black or turns into green.Importantly copper should not come into contact with hands.

For a very clear answer please send me the process.

  • I am working for a contract R & D firm. we will be intrested for the project from you. we definately have a solution for this.

    Thanks

  • Copper corrodes in atmospheric conditions due to carbonate formation that gives green colour. Carbon dioxide in the air reacts with copper and forms green coloured copper carbonate. Obviously, you will have to pay to a consultant,  to get the proper solution.
